COP28 President LOSES It Completely As Alarming Recording LEAKED
The president of the 28th World Climate Conference (COP28), Sultan al-Jaber, makes shocking comments over fossil fuels in relation to climate change impact on video leaked by the Guardian. John Iadarola and Francesca Fiorentini break it down on The Damage Report.
- 6 minutes
I accepted to come to this meeting to
have a sober and a mature conversation.
I'm not in any way signing up to
any discussion that is alarmist,
I am here factual and
I respect the science.
And there is no science out there or
no scenario out there that says
[00:00:18]
that the phase out of fossil fuel
is what's going to achieve 1.5,
1.5 is my notes star.
>> Speaker 2: Okay, you don't need to
phase out fossil fuels to get to 1.5
degrees Celsius maximum warming globally.
[00:00:36]
For any random person to say
that it would be a bad take,
it shows that you don't understand.
Or respect or don't care about
the science and it might be fine for
any random person to believe that.
The issue is that when it's Sultan Al
Jabar, who is now the President of Cop 28.
And is responsible for this nationwide
summit and focus that we're going to
[00:00:54]
have internationally on what
nations can do to come together.
And to try to get us to 1.5
degrees maximum of heating,
it kinda sucks when that's the thing
that he's going on a rant about.
In response to a question about what
this heating is going to do to women and
[00:01:09]
children.
He lost it, it's not just that he's wrong,
it's petulant, it's angry, it's entitled.
That's what we're getting out of this guy,
that video by the way,
which has now been leaked was
apparently recorded November 21.
[00:01:25]
So it's been a couple of weeks,
he has responded to it being released.
He didn't care that he said it,
he didn't put out some sort of updated
information the last couple of weeks.
Only now that you know what he said and
we're going to get to what he had to say.
But I'm going to remind
you this is the guy,
who already was following up
some bad news about Cop 28.
[00:01:44]
You might remember that it was revealed
that the UAE was going to be using
the talks to try to set up oil and
gas deals.
That was already making people wonder
if there was any value whatsoever to
this meeting.
But I want to give you a little
bit more of what he has to say and
[00:02:00]
how defensive he gets over
even light questioning.
>> Speaker 1: A face down and a face out
of fossil fuel in my view, is inevitable,
it is essential, but we need to be
real serious and pragmatic about it.
[00:02:18]
>> Speaker 3: But the real serious and
pragmatic doesn't take into
account that we are in.
I mean, I respect that you've done a lot
of hard work preparing for this cop and
that you've listened to the science.
The science is very acute now,
we don't have any time,
they say six or seven years.
[00:02:35]
We got to peak by 2025, latest in fossil
fuel, fossil fuel and your company
is investing in a lot more new fossil
fuel and that's going to hurt women.
>> Speaker 1: Ma'am, you've just accused
me of something that is not correct,
[00:02:51]
I'm sorry, I don't take it,
now, I ask you to prove to me.
>> Speaker 3: I read that your company
is investing in a lot more fossil fuel
in the future.
>> Speaker 1: Yes, ma'am, you're reading
your own media, which is biased and wrong.
I am telling you, I am the man in
charge and it is wrong, ma'am,
[00:03:06]
you need to listen to me,
please, please for once.
>> Speaker 3: I'm very pleased to hear it.
>> Speaker 1: It is wrong,
you guys write a lie and you believe it.
>> Speaker 2: What she's referencing there
is that in addition to being the president
of Cop 20.
He's also the chief executive of
the United Arab Emirates state oil
[00:03:23]
company ADNOC.
So that just by its very nature,
seems like a big thumb in the eye of
everyone who doesn't want
the world to be set on fire.
But the idea that they are investing in
further fossil fuel exploitation he lost
his mind,
said that it's effectively fake news.
That's what he's saying, and
he did, at least in all of that,
[00:03:43]
say at some point phase out fossil fuels.
But not in six years, not along the
timeline that scientists say is necessary.
We need to do it in a serious,
Pragmatic way,
all of you are children who
are freaking out right now.
But we who are getting rich off of fossil
fuels, we are the only ones who could be
[00:04:00]
serious and responsible about this,
you feel a little bit better, Francesca?
>> Speaker 4: Yeah, once they get their
World Cup and once they create their,
I don't know, high tech,
AI driven city in the middle of nowhere.
Whatever UAE wants to know,
[00:04:17]
once they pollute to the point
of they have so much wealth.
They can't even leave it
to their immediate family,
then we'll transition
away from fossil fuels.
I mean, in this, honestly, first of all,
let's just point out the fact
[00:04:33]
that on a panel about how climate
impacts women with three women there.
He is interrupting a woman and just
talking over her, not a great look dude.
But then on top of that, look,
this is the same stuff that, sadly,
[00:04:49]
our president says, right?
This is what Joe Biden says,
which is, yeah, we need to transition
away from fossil fuels later,
but also we need fossil fuels.
And its again, there is no way to peace,
peace is the way,
[00:05:05]
there is no way to stop climate change
except for ending fossil fuel consumption.
We have to start it now, there is no
we're going to burn a certain amount and
then we're going to stop it.
No, that's not and remember the idea,
John, of peak oil?
[00:05:20]
Yeah, well, when oil, it's so
scarce and inevitably,
we're going to have to transition.
Nope, not the case, especially when oil
barons can just hold on to the oil,
drive up the price, screw all of
our economies in the meantime.
And then you got Joe Biden sort of waiting
hand and foot or hand and mouth disease,
[00:05:39]
whatever it is, on Saudi Arabia to please,
please lower the price of oil.
My God, can we move away from fossil
fuels for a million reasons, but
douchebags like, this is one of them?
>> Speaker 2: Yeah, we can,
they can't, for some reason,
I can't figure out why they would want
to keep doing what they're doing.
[00:05:57]
It's like, you have a horrible serial
killer who's killing people left and
right, and you ask him, like,
could you stop the killing?
He's like, well, let's be serious and
pragmatic, we'll eventually stop killing,
but can I kill a few more people?
Because I really like killing people,
he goes on to say,
[00:06:15]
stop the pointing of fingers, stop it.
You can't just say you're responsible,
no, the oil companies are way
more responsible than all of us together,
that is not up for debate, okay?
And they've already made billions for
literally decades.
[00:06:32]
At what point can they just stop
making more billions over killing so
many people every single year and
rocketing us towards an unlivable future.
